Comment:

This is a gorgeous book taken from the biography of Dovey Johnson Roundtree who was a Civil Rights attorney and activist. But it's not about the big moments in her career it's about a beautiful moment from her childhood spent with her inspiring grandmother. The artwork is lovely and it is perfect to read with young children if you're celebrating grandparents or blackberries or just because it's a fabulous picture book. Ages 4-8.

Comment:

I would have given this lovely book a five star rating except for one word repeated throughout the entire book. "But". This is a love poem to the workers who bring the ideas of architects, scientists, authors and other professionals into reality. "A scientist earns a degree in physics and ecology. He aims toward cleaner energy. But..." My question is why use the word "but" when "and" would have built the team. Since when are construction workers (the main group in the hands on part of each section) not a big deal to children? The scientist or architect is unlikely to get the same amount of information written about their work when it comes to children's picture books. Why not build the team up and say who comes up with the plans AND who brings them into physical reality? Why make it sound like the idea people are over praised while the construction workers are unsung except in this book? The author could have created a truly inclusive feel for both the idea people and the builders with just one word. "And".

This book had me almost standing up and cheering as this ambitious girl came into her own glorious sense of self. What a great book for children to hear as they grow into ambitious people who change the world for the better.
