This is an absolutely sweet book about a boy who finds a stray dog and how he wins its trust. It's practical in all the suggestions about approaching a skittish dog but that is all neatly wrapped up in the story of their growing relationship. Very touching and well done. Ages 4 -8

I was lucky enough to have a local school librarian who shared this with me before I could get our "on order" copy. It's gorgeous! And such a funny, sweet story to go with the beautiful artwork. it's a story about marching to your own drumbeat... literally but it isn't preachy at all. This one feels like a potential award winner.

There is a review of this book on the website "American Indians in Children's Literature" in case you were also wondering about how Native Americans are portrayed in this book like Chapel Hill was. https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2018/01/not-recommended-many-reflections-of.html The reviewer was not impressed. The review has some positives but in the end she cannot recommend the book.

Now I want to know more about Librarian Moore and all those other pioneering librarians! But there are no adult biographies on her. I'll have to start digging around for the random snippets of interesting information.

If I could leave a negative amount of stars for a review I would. This book plays on the magical thinking of children in a way that isn't fun. Instead it pushes the "science" end of things and at the end weakly says the science doesn't prove or disprove mermaids. This non-fiction book is a strong representation of what is wrong with the teaching of critical thinking when it comes to children.

Comment:

This one along with Janeen's first book "I'm a Dirty Dinosaur" are not really about the dinosaur (he is obviously a stand in for a preschool kid) and more about the wonderful rhythm these have when read aloud. You almost dance through the books! I've done both of these in story time and everyone spontaneously claps along to the bouncy rhythm. The illustrations are simple and engaging.
